i made my headed propogator using a normal one and a habistat heat mat that i had left over from when i used to have a vivarium, i think they are about 8 quid, it could be worth haiving a look on ebay as that would solve your heat problems when germinating seeds.
It's Chilli up North.

got Jalapeno`s ,Heatwave  and De Cayenne,  4 of each seed  in a tray on a sunny window sill covered in clingfilm
All 4 de,cayenne and 2 heatwave have germinated and stuck there heads up
No sign of the jalapeno`s yet though .they have been in about 2 weeks,
ill give them another week then sow some more along with namex and golden nugget..

The main thing that has a bearing on propagation times is freshness of seed.  Though there is a general tendency for hab/tepin types to germinate slower.

On saying that my 7 pots were up in a week, ditto dorset nagas.  Chocolate habs took best part of a month, yellow habs less than two weeks.  Rocoto's notoriously slow to germinate were up in a few days.

If seeds of unknown origin or very dry.  Soak in water for at least 24 hrs.  Then let dry and plant in heated propagator, in well moistened compost.

For a first time chilli try some of the ornamentals such as purple prince, numex twighlight easy to grow, don't take up much space, quite hot raw but mellow on cooking.  And provide a very attractive colourful plant.

The following year you'll be wanting to grow the hot habs, buht jolokia etc.

Don't worry! Do soak the seeds in warm camomile tea for 12-24 hours before you sow. Camomile is a natural fungiside. Good luck  :)

Well finally got round to putting the chillies and peppers in the propagator aka the kids are in bed.

Planted a few shall we say here's the list so far:-

 Pepper - Rubens x 2
 Pimentos da padron
 Sweet Pepper - Golden Calwonder
 Satari's Kiss
 Friggitello
 Serrano
 Tondo da Riempire
 Apache
 Trottolino Amoroso
 Cayenne
 Habanero Orange
 Bird's Eye

obviously no where near as long as Biscombe's oh and i had some space left over so put some lettuces and an extra aubergine seed in there.
Next week more tomato planting for me.

Hopefully it will work according to plan but knowing me it won't

I was looking again today at some more chilli seeds but most shops only seem to sell cayenne, so a very big selection at all unfortunately.

The seeds are alive and finally growing!!!!

Other chillies in the propagator but only 4 out of 12 are starting to peak.
I think the chillies are scared of being eaten lol

Now if only my green house would stay up and aubergines would start to grow.
