straw and strawberries
« on: May 04, 2012, 21:01 »
i have 2 strawberry beds on my lotty they are planted into the ground not in raised beds, probably about 20 plants in all, they all look healthy now they are coming back to life and i can see little flowers forming :).  i know this is a silly question but ill ask it anyway, when and how do i introduce the straw, and why?  i said it was a silly question

i add the straw when the strawberries are big and green - so that the ripe fruit stays off the ground and the straw also prevents the slugs from eating them.

I am not terribly experienced in strawberry growing  and I am sure someone more experienced will  give better advice but last year year I put the straw under the plants after the berries started to form.

The straw is to keep the berries out of the mud and dirt and to keep them clean and to stop them rotting as I understand it.
And it is not a silly question.  Asking questions is how we all learn more. ;)

As soon as the plants are large enough to not get buried by the straw mulch, lay it down, and thickly where possible. The berries love a steady moisture which a deep straw mulch will give, plus keep down most weeds, plus keep those berries drier and no splash-back from soil.

You  might get a bit of slug damage but the benefits outweigh the cons. If there's a hosepipe ban this year, then you're already set.

Just remember to remove the old straw in autumn so that the plant crowns don't sit in soggy bug infested straw over winter.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

My FIL who has grown strawbs for decades swears by using Barley straw as  Wheat straw goes mouldy fairly quickly.
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..
