Nipping out Late spuds

A farmer that we know swears by nipping out the flowers on his main crop spuds i wondered if anyone has heard of this its supposed to make the spuds bigger

I can just see a farmer walking around 100's of acres of spuds nipping out the flower buds :roll:  :roll:  :roll:  :roll:

The theory is, if you nip off the flowers then the plant wont seed and will use its resources in the tuber rather than on the flower or seeds therefore giving bigger tubers. I do it but I am not sure that it works. I doubt if it makes a huge difference to the size of your crop but then anything that does contribute to even a small increase in crop size or quality is probably worth it.

I also water my spuds - not the greenery but the soil - with comfrey tea regularly and I do think that makes a big difference in crop. The comfrey tea feeds the soil which feeds the crop. As Munty says 'werks for me'!
