Is it too late for my spuds?
« on: September 10, 2008, 21:04 »
Because I injured my back and my beloved has a new job my spuds are still in the ground.

I worry about them, poor litttle things, they must be lonely.  I am planning to risk going to  the plot to pull up some of them on Friday.  I have some Maris pipers, and some pink firs.

Is there any point - will there be anything edible left, do you think?

I get my kicks on Plot 66!

I am in a similar situation to you in that digging spuds is a no no at the moment.  I have Charlottes still in the ground and pink fir apple.  The PFA seem to be ok but the others are just slug food.  Hope you get some result for all your hard work.

Time in the ground will not hurt them, I'm still lifting 2nd earlies.

[When I was a school (yawn) the autumn half term holidays were an opportunity to earn a few bob picking spuds on the local farms.
Pre-mechanisation of course.]

However slugs wireworm blight etc might just have taken a toll

good luck

I'm still digging up some Nicola which have been ready for a good month.

The odd one is rotten due to the wet soil but I think this wet weather's drowned all the slugs too.

I sure hope they're all OK as I still have about 10 plants of Desiree to dig up, plus the new ones we planted for Christmas that are already flowering!

As long as they're the big above ground ones then that's OK.

It's the little black subterranean keel slug ones that are the problem.

I've still got plenty to dig up but very usefully broke my toe last night so will be hopping up the allotment for a few days. I still have the blight resistant spuds saxa miro and another one think brain has come out in sympathy with toe cant remember the name - any way they are still in flower!! and leaves a good green should they still be like this at this tme of year ?- blight had got most of the rest but harvest so far good.

Caddi

just an idea but is there no young lad who would do it for you
perhaps payment could be a few fresh veg to take home,
my 13 year old GD loved digging spuds, esp pfa because of the
odd shapes.

Our main crop are still in the ground because we just have not had the time to dig them up.  We have only just finished the earlies and tonight have had our first taste of the second earlies (yum).  Hope our main crop have't drowned or been eaten by the nasties but we really don't have anywhere to put them to store.

The one year i grew PFA, they went mushy in the soil if I left them in too long.  May just have been a bad year for them?  The other variety should be fine though.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I thought it was just me that was a little behind.  :?
I am still digging my desiree up and have a few rows of cara to dig as well. The weather has just been too wet to do it so it has been a couple of rows at a time. They seem to be OK though.

Caddi, no problem, the ground is so sandy they will be fine, I dig mine as i need them, last year they were in until beginging of march. I am down tomorrow (sat) moving the greenhouse so will have a look at the ground. so long as we dont get floods you will be ok.
