raised bed growing spacings!!
« on: June 11, 2008, 18:37 »
Just wanted to know if other vegetable growers use shorter spacings between plants when growing in raised beds. When I look in my veggie books they give what I presume are spacing for growing in open ground. I am i right in thinking that when using raised bed I can reduced the spacings? I am really not sure what spacing to use for cabbages and brussels in a raised bed.

If you can reach all parts of your raised beds without having to walk on the soil then you can plant certain stuff much closer than usual.

You only really need the big gaps between rows for access on a big plot when you have to walk on the soil.

My lettuce rows are only a foot apart and almost touch when fully grown.

Generally what is suggested on the seed packet is right,it's just that people usually add another foot or so on a big plot so they can walk between the rows which won't be an issue in a small raised bed. :D

That's all fine, but I personally, would not pack Brussels in, raised bed or not. Cabbage you space as you like, they'll grow smaller or bigger heads accordingly and once you harvested some, the rest will grow bigger. :D

I tend to take the plant spacing on the back of the packet add the row spacing and divide by two and that for me is the plant spacing.. i then work out the most effective way to get into the selected bed area....

Have no idea if this is right or wrong though, just keeps me happy
