New rasberry canes
« on: April 14, 2015, 19:19 »
i put summer rasberry canes in last month
New shoots was coming out of the bottom
Of the canes I think that's for next year they
Seem to have died back  new leaves are
On the canes are ok but the new bits coming
Out from the bottom of the canes are struggling
Is this due to snails or slugs eating the new shoots
Or is it lack of nutrients Will they die or will they live
Thanks

I'm sure they'll be ok - they've only been in a month.
Make sure they're not getting too dry, down here, at least - we haven't had much rain lately!

You could always try scratching the bark with a knife to see if there's any green underneath.

did you fertilise the soil before putting them in? if not sprinkle on some bfb if you don't have fox issues.

put a thick layer of mulch over them and wait. you'll prob only get a handful of berries this year (maybe a more if you're lucky but don't be too hopeful). during the year you should get lots of growth and bring on the berries for next year.

you'll prob be worried about them this year and nurture them, in a couple of years you'll have so many canes you won't know what to do with them.
