Rasberry Canes Question
« on: September 21, 2008, 19:45 »
This year my rasberries proved very poor, producing a mere handful of fruit.  I have reduced them to ground level as I believe you should once they have finished fruiting.  Having done that I now notice that a few new shoots are appearing above ground.  My question is should I eventually cut these back this year or leave them to grow on for next year?

What type of raspberries are they ? Either way leave those new ones alone    how are you feeding them ? early spring give them a dressing of blood fish and bone, before the summer starts water well then give them a good mulch, but make sure it does not touch the stems   :D
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Many thanks for the reply RichyRich.  I am not sure what type they are as they were fom my local Wilkos and I failed to label them   but I suspect your tips on feeding will help next year as I have to confess they were left a little to their own devices (although they are planted where we tend to "dump" our surplus compost from seedlings).  I will leave the new shoots alone and feed next spring as you directed.  Thanks oce again

summar fruiting ones you should leave all the new growth produced this year and justb chop out old and sad looking growth, Autumn fruiting ones chop them right back in the Winter.  That's what i was told anyway.
