Summer & Autumn Rasberry canes?
« on: September 24, 2009, 12:08 »
Is it possible to plant summer & autumn rasberries together & if so, which would work better at the back? Thank you.  :)

Summer raspberries at the back, as they grow much taller and need some kind  of staking.

Your problem is going to be that both sorts spread like crazy and are liable to get mixed up.
(Ask me how I know!).

Cheers,

Gillie

Thanks for that. Are they difficult to control then, both mine are first years, looking forward to first batch of autumns some time soon? well not too soon, still in flower mode!!!

If you want the two sorts, then plant two distinct patches. You have to be able to go round the patch and cut off any unwanted suckers (or, plant where you can let them spread: more rasps  :tongue2:  :tongue2: )

I have 100 canes, 10 varieties of 10 plants each (or there abouts).  They are in a double row with first early at one end, and late Autumn fruiting at the other end ...

That seems to work well for us in terms of pruning and picking.

Well, yes we do, but we don't really get THAT many.  Just "enough" but over a long season :)

The first ones start in June, and the last Autumn ones have only just started so will go until mid October I reckon.

That sounds like an idea Kristen, might try that, then at least I can prune at different times. Unfortunately I only have about 6 canes of each, thats how big my patch is! which is just as well as I'm the only one that likes rasberries! :tongue2: Thanks to Gillie & Tode 4 replies. :)
