Sour Crop?
« on: December 18, 2012, 22:27 »
I have a hen (9 months old) who has developed sour crop and is not eating. since Friday I began a week of worming, so I have only left out the wormer/ pellets for them to eat, and have not feed them the other foods the also eat. They went on strike, complained and refused to eat, but over a few days all have given in apart from my Gold Laced Orpington who has not eaten and now has sour crop.

I spoke to my chicken friendly vet who suggested that I should feed live yoghurt and forget worming her for now. There is not a lot of fluid in her crop so I did not try to expel it, I offered her foods which she loves but she only pecked at them. However she did take a little yoghurt with a little encouragement.

She has also decided she now wants to moult.

Any advice you may have would be of great help.

Is it sour crop or impacted?  Just a thought that she may have started eating nesting material if she wasn't eating the pellets.

i'm pretty sure its sour crop, a part from a the bit of fluid her crop is empty. I'm going to offer her watery porridge mixed with yoghurt and a little honey in the morning, which I hope she will eat.

I have used pureed apple, carrot, garlic, a little honey and water for my broody.  It helps their appetite so you could try that.

She did eat some of the porridge with yoghurt and honey this morning. Good news that the fluid seems to have passed but she still has that same bad smell. Will try offering a little more yoghurt.

If you give her live yogurt it will have all the good bacteria in which should help.
