I opened the coop this morning to find my hen very cold so I brought her into the house to warm up. I sat in the conservatory with my first cuppa of the day, with her on my lap.  It was early and the vet doesn't open til nine.  Just before nine I picked up the phone to make an appointment to have her put to sleep when she reared up a little, woke up briefly but then she died

Despite tlc and the medication she seemed unable to rally.  She was 3.5 years old which is old for a Warren hybrid I suppose. She was the feistiest of hens, the boss, and I loved her very much  :(

She had a marvellous life and even survived a brush with a fox. She was a beautiful copper hen and her feathers shone  :) I thought she was a stunner. She did too!  I couldn't face going down the garden today, I was just so upset.

Oh I'm so sorry. We lost one yesterday and I can sympathise with how sad you must feel.  I almost cried twice on the train coming home from work today!

Oh dear, so sorry to hear that  :(   I didn't think I would get so attached to my hens but they are so endearing, plus they laid like mad, so you have to give them loads of care and attention and you can't help being upset when you lose them.
