New pullet being badly bullied
« on: April 01, 2007, 21:51 »
Hello All - one week ago we got two new chickens (about one year old)from a friend who could no longer keep them. One unfortunately died the next day - assume from stress but underlying weakness. Then this weekend we got a 16 week old pullet on basis that hens are social creatures.

Unfortunately the original chicken has really not taken well to the newcomer. She relentlessly attacks her. We have made them sleep in the coop (an Eglu) together but in the day she attacked the little one so much that we took pity and let them both free range. They spent the day at opposite ends of the garden, with the new one running to us for cover every time the original hen made any advances towards her.

We can't put wire down the run because only one would have no access to the house incase it rains. We have instead converted our summerhouse into a temporary henhouse, splitting it in the middle with waist high wire. Otherwise we have pulled out the door panels and replaced them with chickenwire and the windows are all glass but we have covered the lowest part of them with newspaper.

Does anyone have any inkling as to how this arrangement will work for our hens? Is it likely to stop the bullying? What would be the best way of dealing with them? Could the original chicken actually kill the new one- what about in an Eglu?

I have had chickens in the past but never just two and have never seen a new chicken bullied quite so intensely.

Any responses gratefully received.

its bad but it will resolve itself .. one of two ways . they will get on or the bigger hen can kill the littlun ... wire the sumerhouse as you have and let them be for a few weeks like that feeding them all together in the summerhouse etc . hang some ball cabbages up in the summer house on wire coat hangers unwound and push one end through the cabbage   twist it back on its self tie string and hang on a nail this will act as a distraction alos lettuce and any other greens can do it . just persevere for now . they wil get used to each other
still alive /............

Just turn a blind eye, and let them sort it out, the way chickens do. at the end of the day the older hen is just protecting its territory, the new hen is an intruder who needs to be put in its place, the older hen will probably attack the younger one for a few days but after that it should all settle down with the older hen being the dominant one.

They will sort out pecking order, don't worry.  I put an aseel hen in with my five other mixed breeds.  They all had a go at her but she knocked seven bells out of em all -  no messing, but she is twice the size and weight.  Needless to say, she is top of the pecking order now and they are all friends.  Let em get on with it, especially if there is a good run for them to move around in.  The distracting technique that MJ suggested is always good too.

I just thought I would let everyone know how this was sorted out. Our chickens spent one week in the summerhouse that we had split down the middle with chickenwire. The older hen hated being in there but the little one I think was just relieved that she wasn't being attacked. After one week - or in fact 5 days - we put them both in the Eglu together and miraculously the bullying stopped!!! THe pecking continued a little bit but not in a serious way and now (a couple of weeks later) the two are the best of friends, which is a great relief to all concerned!!

Thank you to everyone who gave helpful advice and encouragement - much appreciated.
