Put them in about ten days ago and then we are topping up the soil as they poke through

But already we have had to top it three times and I woke up this morning and there they are again

are they always this fast to grow or do they just like this awful weather we are having.

You are not supposed to cover the whole plant...

otherwise, something uncovers them...

ok, I am really confused!

I thought you planted potatoes/seeds and then they grew green leafs above ground and tatties underground.  I do not recall my Dad ever covering them over all the time.

No, you don't. Just pull some soil around the base a few times.

But Beetrootqueen is growing them in a bin, and you do top up the soil as they grow. Just keep going untill they get to the top and you can't top it up any more :)

ok i have always grown spuds in bins so here goes

you plant your seed spuds then as they grow you cover the hole plant
so there is no leaves showing repeat this until you get to the top on your bin

i have done it this way for years and i always get a good crop of spuds

Don't be surprised then they grow so fast, you are depriving them of light, the same as leggy seedlings. :D

I have some growing in a black bucket and I was surprised at the speed of growth too.  I now have green tops about 80cm high.

Quick Q - how do I know when they are ready to harvest?

Hight is not an exact indication of plant growth, flowering usually is the time when tuber formation starts.
