They might be ready, but how warm is the soil on your plot?

It's still cold and wet here  :(

The earlier you plant the more you have to protect against frost / late frost ...

I was eager when I was young, now I prefer to avoid the work  ;)

My plan is to plant just a few earlies soon and then the rest at the end of the month. That way only the few earlies should need frost protection later.

I never plant any out until at least the end of March, having (over eagerly) planted them too early before.  Obviously, this is Scotland so the later the better, I guess.  However, I did my gardening training in a big garden in Bristol many years ago and the head gardener there never planted potatoes (early or otherwise) before the end of March, and usually well into April.

Oops. Planted mine today.
Soil at 8 deg C at 150mm depth.  Now I check my little book, and see I have planted 2 weeks earlier than ever before. But I have been having a running battle with a mouse that has been eating my chitting spuds.
So it was a choice between possible frost damage, or certain mouse damage  :)
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Planted 6 'Athlete' in pots outside on the 16 Feb.  Just breaking through. Night temps are 1/2 degs. so will need covering.

I planted all my at the weekend, quite deep and with a covering of seaweed.  We rarely get frosts (near the sea) so fingers crossed should be OK by the time they emerge and I won't be having to dash up to cover them.

My neighbour has had his in for at least two weeks including lots of other stuff!! He is always very, very early. His plants do grow, but I wonder if being so early has an affect on crop yield. I'm no expert, but the difference in light levels and temperatures during the plants' life cycle could have an influence I guess.

I have two weeks before the kids all return home at which point my chitting spuds lose the bed they are all lay on. So they will be going in before then

A statistic which may interest you all. Over the last 3 march months, my solar panels have generated an average of 355 Kwts., with very little between them. The first two weeks of this March have produced just 105 Kwt . This is due to poor light due to cloud and with a cold easterly wind, growing conditions have been very poor. Plants that normally do well now such as Broad Bean and Shallots are making very little progress.

I agree, Spring warmth is a bit late  :(
I usually manage to get my potatoes and early peas in about now, but the soil is still too cold here.

I am just up the road in Faversham, so please let me know when you get yours in MoS! I was going to do my Charlottes today, but might hold off for a while.

Just put my earlies in today. Planted fairly deep. Will be ready to cover once they are up incase of a late frost.
