Apple Trees
« on: September 29, 2012, 15:12 »
I've just bought two Heritage apple trees. A Blenheim Orange and a Howgate Wonder on M106 rootstock. and a patio bush with James Grieves and Elstar on the same bush.

All three are to be planted on my allotment but I'm confused over the pollination. I assume the dual patio one will pollinate each other or does this need a pollinator. Having researched some sites it say Blenheim Orange is group B triploid, Howgate Wonder group B another site says group D. James Grieves Group B but can't find the Elstar pollination group.

Three other allotments on our site have apple trees but I've no idea what type or pollination group they are, so do I have a good chance of a decent crop from the trees I've bought.

I found sites that said James Grieve and Elstar are Cs, Blenheim Orange and Howgate Wonder are Ds.
Cs and Ds will have some overlap in flowering, so you should be ok  :)

Thanks for that. I hope they do fruit.  What is strange is the sites I been on are well known fruit growers but each company tell you different groups. No consistency. Very strange.

I have bought trees from AshridgeTrees and so that's where I looked first ;)

Now found another site that says that Elstar is pollinated by Howgate Wonder and James Grieve  http://www.orangepippintrees.co.uk/pollinationchecker.aspx?v=1020

so they're all ok  :D

Thats great. Thanks for the website links.
I bought them in a local garden centre clearance sale. I just went to have a look round because my plot was to wet to work on. The two trees were half price and the dual one was two-thirds cheaper, so I saved £60 on the original garden centre prices which are always overpriced.  So if they produce some fruit over the years they will have been a bargain. I could hardly move in my little car when I brought them home.

Just need to get them in the ground now.

Blenheim Orange is a triploid so will not pollinate any of the others, it's pollen is sterile.
However you have sufficent that it makes no difference.

Allow Blenheim Orange so space as being a triploid it tends to be more vigerous
