Paper shreddings and veg peelings
« on: December 30, 2013, 12:30 »
I bought myself a much-needed cross-cut paper shredder for Christmas. Having tried it out (which made the cats jump a mile) I plan to shred all the un-needed paperwork accumulated over the last two or more years, then dig two bean trenches and mix it with veg peelings, plus any lawn cuttings I can get when it stops raining. Anyone else done this?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I don't suppose there are many gardeners with compost heaps and a paper shredder who don't add the contents to their heaps or bins. Obviously it mixes in and decomposes much faster when shredded, although you will need to take some precautions in a trench to avoid them blowing away.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I used my shreddings under the strawberries as a mulch.  Looked a bit messy but seemed to work to keep the fruit off the soil and keep the soil moist.  Then scraped the remains off at the end and put it on the compost heap.

I thought I would dig my trench then add the above in sections and cover with the topsoil as I go along (if it ever stops raining and dries up a bit). Just had a go with my paper shredder and, apart from the extension cable not working (thought it was my shredder for a minute just like my new PC speakers) but now got a 21 litre basket full, and lots more to go.

I now add paper shredding's to my compost heap on a regular basis in between green stuff - I'm going to also line my bean trenches with it and water it in with comfrey tea and compost from this years buckets I grew tomatoes in.

I add my egg boxes (the thick paper mache type) to my compost heap.  Pulled into small pieces and soaked in water for ten mins or so before adding to the heap.

It's great to see all those bank letters getting chucked where they really belong...

I had a whole bin-bag full, and still rub my hands with glee as I watch them decay and rot with the spud bushings...

Hurgh Hurgh Hurgh.....

You should get some horse, or better still, male cattle manure to put on top of them .....
