I use a fertiliser with an NPK of 6:8:15 for show leeks and onions, with added magnesium seen as ideal IMO. So anything that gives that sort of ratio is perfect.

For the majority of the time though, so long as the soil is in good heart, and has no obvious deficiency, any general fertiliser will be fine. I use BFB for most crops and I do alright.

Avoid any fertilisers with a higher balance of nitrogen though. Too much leafy growth in onions is a waste of time and can cause problems with storage.

Blood, fish and bone for me as well. Avoid too much nitrogen, it encourages green growth and is not good for long storage life.

Thanks everyone, good old blood fish and bone it is, I've always got some in the shed along with lime for the greens.

Use some BFB and dig it in a couple of weeks before planting then broadcast a small sprinkling after a couple of months...

I also give mine a watered in feed of Potassium Sulphate after summer solstice, as it seems to give them a bit of a boost once they start to bulb up.

I no longer use nitrogen rich fertiliser as it gives plenty of green growth which leads to thick necks, which in my experience don't store much past Early December. This year as an experiment I will only add Lime to my soil & see how my Onions go. I say this because in the past I have fed my Onions at least twice in a season and have often ended up with very good sized bulbs with thick necks which rot in the medium term, so I'm hoping for slightly smaller bulbs that last.

One thing I always do is dry the Onions and then dry them again. My best year for Onion storage is when I left the Onions in the ground way past when the foliage died back.

The only benefit of adding lime to onion beds is to adjust the ph of your soil. Onions prefer a ph of between 6.2 and 6.8 so lime is only needed to alter that level. So it won't fertilise the plants.
