Kohl rabi harvest time...
« on: November 29, 2012, 16:23 »
We've had a pretty good start to growing KR this year, and as it is indeed a very special vegetable, we're going to grow twice as many next year.

Does the team think that a succession of sowing, starting in - say - March, will produce a regular supply, and if it does, how long does the crop last?

We've still got a couple of dozen lurking under nets, but presumably, they're not growing very much! I'd like to think that they might overwinter, but that may be fantasy...

Lucky you  ;) it doesn't mind a bit of frost, but won't take a really hard freeze, so it just depends on what weather we get...........

Thanks Mums!

As we're nearly neighbours, I reckon you can tell the story pretty well!

I just see these chaps, not much bigger than a hen's egg, and wonder if they'll get hit by frost/slugs etc, but so far, I just LOVE the flavour and texture...

May try to get them under some netting next year - and early!

I'll be trying the same in spring and late summer - my purple ones have got to tennis ball size and are so tasty. You can freeze them if you've got too many.

Good idea, Surbie - once peeled, they won't take up too much room either!

It's the texture which amazes me, they crunch so well, I'm sorry I hadn't discovered them years ago!

I thought one needs to harvest them when they are young and tender, but my plot neighbor left them late and used for stewing

I like kohl rabi - easy to grow and a lovely crunch as you say Growster  :)

Small and young, they are lovely in salad or grated in a slaw.  Bigger ones get quite turnip like, so I can see them being quite good in stew.  They make a nice soup as well, simmered with a few pot veg then blended with a bit of cream  :)
