is it more than a cold?
« on: October 08, 2008, 16:02 »
Had a chook with a poorly eye yesterday. Looks a bit better today. However, I now have one which is coughing and has a runny nose. Is it Mycoplasama ? or could she simply just have a cold due to bad weather of late? She has bright eyes and is feeding and is active, but think she may have stopped laying. Getting quite anxious now as I seem to be getting probs and have only had them a couple of months. Would they have been injected agains anything serious? If it is Mycoplasama will it get better on its own and will there be any lasting effects.

Sounds like you might need some Tylan (anti biotic) from your vet it is used for respiratory problems. The symptoms you are describing snotty nose sneezing and the eye problem are often caused by stress.

Keep us posted as to how you get on.

After the birds settle in well there shouldn't be as many problems. There can be lasting effects if not caught early but it seems that you watch your birds very close so will catch problems in the early stages.
Being a first time poultry owner can be stressful for you as well. There is a lot of pressure to do right by the birds that comes from deep within yourself. Take time so that you can spend time with the birds, take something out to sit on, a nice cup of your favorite beverage and a small cup of scratch grains, feed the birds, talk to them and think about nothing else. You will soon see a change in the birds, and you too. Enjoy them, they are a lot of fun to be around.

Good advice - I do that with my veg as well.
Any excuse to sit down with a cup of tea and contemplate.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
