I planted a row of earlies yesterday but the rest will wait another 10 days or so. The earlies need to be in now if they are going to produce those yummy little potatoes by late May / early June.

My logic is that I will expect these to come through and be too big to earth up any more when we are still expecting frosts in early May.

I do not mind running round covering these few with a bit of fleece but do not want my whole crop to be at risk as that is too much work.

Too cold and the ground is too wet here.

Too cold and too wet here as well. I reckon I'm looking at the end of March down here in the weald (lots of clay). Ground just seems to take ages to warm up. However, with my wife being form Cork, I was under serious pressure to get them in on the 17th, "as we do back home".  ;) :)

No, I'm waiting for April.  I've got too many spuds this year to risk frost getting them.  They're happily chitting away and the area on my allotment that I've designated for spuds is still being dug over - so can't get them in just yet  ::)

far too cold and wet here, usually mid April for me, north facing slope doesn't help.
I think they are safer chitting away quietly in trays. just heard about some 2009 horse manure, might try and pick some of that up this week.

I have leaves showing on some potatos I planted in my cold frame last month, only five spuds of the Lady chrystl type so I might get a nice early crop if the frosts are not to severe.

I think I would get those growing tips covered pretty quick.... we're bound to have another frost or more before the all-clear.

A little late in replying but yes I did, I try to always practice what I preach...
" In with paddy and out with billy"
Main crop will go in around 2nd week of April.

" In with paddy and out with billy"

I have heard this before and get the "in with Paddy" but what is the "out with Billy" bit?
