Coir Compost
« on: January 16, 2010, 21:14 »
Has anyone used coir compost? What are its good and bad points? It's on sale at a very good price at my local garden centre but I've never used it before, so I was wondering whether to give this a go.

Another compost question - given that grobags are normally a lot cheaper than the equivalent size of general purpose compost, is there any reason not to just buy grobags and use that instead?

I'm peat-free and have used coir quite a bit. Its watering character is different from peat-based, the top dries out faster and it stays wet longer, so you need to test for watering by lifting the pot, not by looking at it... I now mix it with other peat-frees to get a better structure...

good for seedlings when mixed w vermiculite

expensive so get it while its cheap!
