Coir plug
« on: March 29, 2014, 22:11 »
Coir plugs - the discs you add water too and then they grow. Are they any good for veg? I've found them for £7.99 for 100 (peat free), might be a little less mess when I pot up in the living room  ::) !
My favourite weed is a raspberry ;)

I've not tried the coir ones but if they behave like the peat pots I'd steer clear.

In my experience the peat ones dry out quickly and the plants don't seem to thrive on transplanting.  But others may have had better success.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I tried them and they dried out really quickly.  I also found that the wrapping material, which is supposed to degrade, never did.  Wouldn't bother again...

I would agree with the previous comments - I tried them a few years ago and they were a total disaster. Hard to keep moist and dried out very quickly. I had to resow most of my seeds.

Oh dear - I've sowed the veg that I'm using for the seed saving group in the coir pellets in the hope that they would be even more successful.

Friend on the allotment uses these and peat pots. He puts a small handful of chicken pellets in a bucket of water and puts the pots/plugs in that for a few minutes then uses them. He does this with his onion sets and always wins 1st prize !

Just make sure you keep a really close eye on their watering, and when it comes to planting out you may want to cut off the netting (if there is any) around the coir, and make sure the top of the coir plug isn't 'proud' of the surrounding soil.

Very important point, same applies to loo rolls.

Indeed, and to the paper pots used by many on here.

I've used these to germinate chillis and tomatoes with no problems at all. The benefit is you can just pot on the whole plug without having to bother with pricking out etc.

I use the plastic propagators that they're often sold with, and they seem to stay pretty moist in there. I've tried peeling off the netting for potting on but they seem to do just fine when you leave it on.

One thing that can happen when you're potting on is that, when you water, the potting compost sinks but the plug stays the same size. So be sure to bury the plug nice and deep.
