My plot is 167 sq metres. Now it feels like a right diddy area! I wouldnt expect to be self sufficient on this size

Size doesn't matter, Paula, it's what you make of it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

When allotments were originally created to give the working man a big enough plot to feed his family they were measured in square poles.

A full allotment was 10 poles. Usually 2 poles x 5 poles

A pole is a quarter of a chain (chain = 22 yards) or 51/2 yards. (rod, pole or perch are the same thing.)

Therefore a 10 pole allotment was approx 300 suare yards.

Many allotments are still set out with these measurements.

In those days families were large and potatoes were the staple of every diet. No fancy mange tout, patty pan or rocket for them. Potatoes, beans, peas, marrows, root crops and cabbages. Grow enough or the family goes without.

I have 11.5 square meters of deep raised beds and I am going to feed 3 of us off it - we may end up resembling twiggy mind!

No chance of self sufficiency, and since my local Indian supermarket sells 10kg bags of onions for a quid, no particular need too.
Sticking to high value stuff, soft fruit, maybe a bit of garlic and few herbs, the rest can grow in tesco.

Edited because I'm an idiot

I live five miles from the nearest supermarket, so I'm quite keen on growing my own. My allotment is about 22x 10 but I can't remember whether that is m or yds. No idea if that's enough or not though as I've only just started clearing it properly.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Our site has just passed it's 90th birthday and the whole place is still set out as Salmo explains above.A lot of people have double or triple plot's but we just have the one 300 sq.yd and think that's going to be plenty to feed three of us.
Mind you there is one bloke who has 8 plot's in total, the rules say we are not allowed to grow stuff to sell so he must just be a big eater.
