removing stumps in growing area

In the corner of our new plot, there are 2 ornamental conifer shrubs/trees..i cut one down to the stump today..before rain intervened..how best to deal with stump/roots as i dont want to weedkiller as this is part of my growing area..any ideas appreciated

dig them out, conifer roots are very shallow and grow horizontaly.dig around the stump and keep chopping the roots off, eventually you will be able to rock it and lift it out.would have been better to leave a longer stump so its easy to rock, but you will know for next time :)

The good thing is that conifers don't usually regrow from the stump/roots.

Just dig out the bits that get in the way, the rest will rot in situ  ;)

Tie a round turn and two half hitches to the stump at one end and the other a bowline over a towing ball hitch of a 4X4.  Makes a change from the school run.  :closedeyes:

A 1.5m long 'digging bar' gets right under stubborn stumps and acts as a great lever if you've cut down to ground level and if it's too intractable for a spade alone.

Thanks for the advice, all will help..i havnt cut down to the ground..

2 slight problems with the 4 x 4 advice..i havnt got one  and the path is about a yard wide to get to the plot :blink:


i will let you know how it goes..at least im not stumped!!!
