What should I use to get rid of tree stumps? Any ideas?

I'd have thought your biggest problem is the sheds behind. Any leverage on the stumps will lift them.

I've only dug out slightly smaller conifer ones. Dug a big hole, cut through the main roots and pulled. Came out eventually.

I can only add that you could use ropes to "pulley" one of another to help loosen them. Dig all round is the way to go.

Dynamite :D

Just kidding I had tree stumps in my garden not quite as big but hey.  Good old fashioned digging, pick axe is always good too.

I was considering a more... erm... chemical solution??

(Though dynamite sounds good!)

I think you could certainly kill them with something, although it may take a while and you'd have to drill some holes down into them.
But they'll just sit and rot for a few years, growing some wonderful looking fungi. :)

I would have thought there'll be a lot of digging and heave-hoing whichever method you use  :(

If there was nothing too close you could have built a bonfire around each one. My son's done it on his plot works a treat.

This might be useful

http://www.humeseeds.com/stump.htm

it involves boring holes in the stump to fill it with saltpetre solution and then burning it out without a fire as such.

saltpetre is an ingredient of gunpowder, when something is soaked in a solution of it and then dried out, it burns like a fuse on a firework.

 :D :D :D :D :D
Nice and simple, walk into a chemical supplier and explain that you want saltpetre, potassium nitrate - KNO3, and that it is used in the production of gunpowder, (explosive).

KNO3 is the active ingredient, as in the bit that makes it go bang.

How long is it they can question terrorists for without charging them? ::) ::) ::)

Bantams will do it fast enough if there`s a chance of a worm. ::)

Or try your local plant hire shop and see if they have a Tirfor (spelling?) ground anchor and winch them out.

you can get saltpetre on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2oz/56g-FOOD-GRADE-SALTPETRE-Saltpeter-Salt-Peter-Petre_W0QQitemZ160321187953QQcmdZViewItem

If you drill a deep enough hole in the stump and mix 75 parts saltpetre with 15 parts charcoal and 10 parts sulpher, bind with a little urine, spread on foil and dry to a cake, then grind it up and put it in the stump, stick a fuse in (string soaked in saltpeter solution and dried out), light and run away - stump gone (and maybe sheds too)  :D

Avoiding explosive options , you could hire a stump grinder if there is a petrol one or you have a genny. Does the job a treat, and my SIL took out some about 2 foot across like this  :)
