Chickens don't catch colds nzdunn but it's almost impossible to say what your hens had.  If they are better now all's well and good :)

this is what i found Auntie!
It has been demonstrated that the vaccine only prevents the appearance of Marek's disease tumors and paralysis. It does not prevent the birds from becoming infected with and shedding the Marek's virus.

Hi nzdunn,
there are lots of resp illnesses that are not necessarily myco, my vet says that chickens can get virus' (common cold type thing) . have a look at this site

Nicky don't worry a snotty nose on it's own isn't myco - could be dust or similar up her nostrils. When one of mine had it the snotty nose was accompanied by rattling chest, swollen eyes and sinuses, hunched up, very sore closed up throat, weight loss and very very under the weather. A trip to my vets - blood tests, injection, metacam and aureomycin plus a couple of days taking it easy saw her as right as ninepence  :D Joyxx
Staffies are softer than you think.

Nicky, it is easy to get paranoid, i do it all the time
My Sablepoots aren't competely well after Tylan, i could go and get jabs for them but its the 3rd time for one of them, the Brahma is fine and just had the rattly chest[2nd time]. All these came from Proper breeders or Poultry exhibitions and have been vaccinated, though probably not for Myco.
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

That's right Debbie and a lot of people don't realise that.  It is the reason that a lot of serious breeders of silkies, which are particularly suseptible to marek's, won't vaccinate and imediatly cull any birds with any sign of marek's.  That way they breed resistence to marek's into the breed rather than weaken it by vaccination.

Debbie

There are a lot of viruses they can get but not "the common cold" that humans get so don't worry about giving them your cold .

Thanks for those links Debbie.  I'll add them to the sticky.

Hi all, i have been watching the forum with interest so i thought  i may put a bit of information here about mycoplasma, vaccinations and other such stuff.!!!!!

Ok first up Mycoplasma, talking from experience vaccinating against mycoplama is not as simple as you may think, i know because i do vaccinate against it.

There is only one licensed vaccine in this country for Mycoplasma and it only treats one type! However there are two types!!!!! It aint cheap its around the £90.00 mark for 1000 doses so its worth it if your hatching a thousand a month! The other vaccine you have to import through your vet and that is serious money, only worth it if your breeding on a large scale! Having said all this i do vaccinate all of my stock against Mareks, mycoplasma, Infectious Bronchitus, Cocciodosis and Newcastle Disease because so many people are now jumping on the bandwagon and breeding poultry and not vaccinating and that is why we are getting lots of poultry disease.

Hope this helps! :D

Its a broad spectrum antbiotic, its used in the broiler industry and in large scale hatchery. Its around £89.00 for a large bottle of it but it lasts for a long time if you only have a small flock. I was told about it by someone who has a large freerange farm (21,000 chcikens!!!!) and my vet confirmed it to be the best available.  Cant recall off hand what the active ingredients are but your vet will be able to tell you if you have one who is an avian specialist. Hope this helps.

I use areomycin which is also a broad spectrum antibiotic also used for other agricultural farm animals as recommended by my vets - probably has the same active ingredients.
