Plans for next year
« on: September 18, 2007, 21:02 »
As I live in the North East, and because I dont have a greenhouse or polytunnel etc, apart from garlic and winter onions, I am not growing anything over the winter.

Thus I have too much time on my hands and am spending money and planning my crops for next year :D

Your advice this year has been really invaluable and I have learnt several lessons despite our dismal summer.

What I would like to expand on is what you find is more suited to container growing?

I was very sucessful with my radishes (sparkler) so will stick with that variety for the time being.  My carrots (Autumn King) were ok, although not on the big side, but one of the lessons learnt is to water well  Same with the spring onions (white lisbon) which were skinny to say the least!

I intend to grow sweetcorn and peas and am trying to establish what is better in containers.  I have searched using a variety of keywords such as container growing pea etc but nothing much coming up.

What experience have you had with containers and different varieties?  Any recommendations for the following:

sweetcorn
peas
strawberries (I have a basket type planter ready for this so needs to be tumbling type)

Your advice as always is much appreciated

peas work well in containers.  Sweetcorn I'd have thought not - unless it is a really big 'un

I started off some late dwarf bean Ferrari in flower buckets in unheated greenhouse, 4 to a bucket, they are coming on a treat.  should be OK for earlier in the season say end May onwards as it keeps them above slug level.  This is closer together than the packet recommends but I lost patience with the beans/weather/slugs etc.

The boss grows his sweetcorn in polystyrene boxes that his meat gets delivered in, he normally does well with them. I think he puts 4 plants to each box.

I grew Berlotti beans in a container this summer.  They were more of a drawf bean so seemed to suit containers.

containers are like gold fish bowls, a pain. But if you have the time you have full control over the content of the container(water, food, ect). Spud do well in a tyre tower.
always have a target
and an objective.

I always grow lots in containers, every thing from strawberrys to lettuce, potatoes to runner beans, marrows to carrots you name it I have grown it in a container.
This year I only grew a little and planted mostly in the ground.Bad mistake got flooded. So next year back to lots and lots of containers and a bit of normal planting.
As Munty said it takes a little more care on watering and adding the right plant supplements at the right time but it does work.
