I think that variety makes the biggest difference.

For the last three years, blooming Butcher have consistently cropped 2-3 weeks earlier than other varieties.

This year, I found that Maskotka and Nikolayev Yellow Cherry were also earlier (though last year they were some of the latest cherry tomatoes to ripen).

Early heat and light helps get the plants established but my experience is that using heat and light only increases the crop and doesn't make much difference to the time of cropping.

Just a reminder to members who have grown tomatoes this year but not got round to posting their results in the Home Grown Tomato survey 2013 on this board - so far this year we've got 26 usable posts from members, in 2011 we finished up with 36, and I thought that was a bit on the low side.  :(

I'm happy to do the work of putting the results together, but clearly the results of a survey are of very limited value if only a handful of people participate in it.

Thanks to all those who have already contributed.  :)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

No toms until mid August seems pretty typical.
I've been searching the web for advice on how to bring this forward next year.  Does anyone out there have any good advice?  Would a little early season heat help....  or maybe growlights?

What varieties are better?  I got 'Strilo' (a F1 hybrid) to ripen early August.

I find Sungold is really quick to ripen, certainly beats the other varieties I've tried such as red alert, shirley.

Perhaps you can add your comment to the survey at the top of the page, Nobbie?

I noticed with mine that the smallest ones (100&1000s) ripened first through to the beef ones (pomodoro Marmande) which were last, and all sown around the same time.
