Almost anything peat based - they work! Started the year with Erin as that was what was on offer when I went to 10% off Winter sale in January but have used B&Q and Wickes own brands since and they have been fine.

I would second that.  I have been really good at only buying peat free stuff for general use, but it just isn't fine enough for seeds and dries out quickly.  Does anyone know of a peat-free seed compost that works?

I use John Innes Seed Compost - i.e. soil based. I fine the peat seed composts (like Levingtons) are too fine.

I am a fan of John Innes as well which I get from Homebase.    No.1 for seeds and cuttings, and No.2 for most other things.   I also add vermiculate to the No.1 for better aeration.     I mix John Innes with ordinary peat based compost for summer bedding containers because of the weight, and just peat based for hanging baskets.

This year I bought ASDA's professional multipurpose compost 2 large bags for about £6 it is rich and dark with no bits in it at all, best I have ever bought, from now on it’s the only one I’ll buy.
