Fresh stable manure-how to apply????
« on: October 23, 2009, 15:32 »
:) I have been offered some good quality stable manure-genuine ex-horse!
My rough plan is to give my cleared veg. plot a goodish layering over the next few weeks and then leave it to calm down with the winter weather doing its job until next March and the rotovate it in.
Is this a fair plan or am I going to have problems later- I have no other `dump` site to leave it to mature?-cheers-H

I would leave it longer if I was you.

What are you planning on growing next year? Not all veg like well manured soil.
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

I've done the same but with our own sheep manure/bedding straw and all the bare soil on my beds is now covered. For the non manure-liking crops, I'm planning to scrape away the manure before planting so at least there is some goodness pulled into the soil by winter weather and worms - then I will hand dig the beds for potatoes and beans/peas etc, but the brassica bed won't be dug as they like firm soil so I will scrape away the manure and plant into the soil beneath. Depends on how fresh your horse manure is - it can be pretty hot for a while but I believe it rots down quickly so you might be ok. ::)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

This is for summer crops-mainly french and runner beans, courgettes and the like. Not potatoes and not roots like carrots/beets/perp spinach etc.

I cover the ground in manure where I am going to plant my spuds, just before planting I dig it in and then put a cultivator over the fresh dug ground so it is well mixed, overwintering fresh hoss muck is plenty long enough time, I have also made a lasagne bed with fresh muck over the winter and planted brassicae's in the spring, layer of fresh muck, layer of straw, layer of fresh muck, layer of straw dig a hole and plant straight in in the spring.
