How should I prepare a graft?
« on: April 27, 2010, 07:11 »
I need to help my Dad grow a Bramley apple in Portugal. Probably the easiest way of doing this is to post a twig over at the appropriate time of year and get him to graft some buds into an established rootstock.

Any advice on preparing the donor material? How long is it likely to survive in the post? would you send it wrapped in damp paper/plastic or should it be sent 'dry'? How long is the material likely to remain viable?

Regards,

SS

Quote from another forum.

hi there here is a copy of email I got in reply from Defra about us taking plants to spain, this email only came in on Wednesday so it is still valid and current and I hope it helps;

Dear xxxxx

The only plants you may not take to Spain from the UK are
rhododendron/azaleas, viburnum or camellias (to prevent the spread of a
serious fungal disease to which these plants are hosts).

You may take as many other plants as you wish, including the soil they
are growing in, without the need for any plant health documentation.
Please note that all plants entering another country are subject to
'random' inspection to ensure freedom from plant pests and disease.

Regards.
