Growing from below the graft, free trees?
« on: May 29, 2013, 23:18 »
I have a couple of trees that didn't make it over the winter.
One is a Crab Apple and the the other a Plum.
Both are now growing from under the graft and I wondered if it might be worth letting them grow?
Any idea on what I might get?

what ever the parent root stock is - so generally still an apple or a plum, just not what ever was on the top.

Are they on pots or in the ground ? if it's pots I'd be tempted to let them stay and see what you get. if they were in *my* ground I'd yank them and maybe pot them, my open soil is in too short a supply for shirkers and makeweights :-)

best of luck

Generally the rootstock is selected to suit the ground conditions or density requirements and will be inferior to the grafted tree. It all depends on the variety, in a couple of years you may find your Plum had a Damson or Apricot rootstock, but don't expect decent fruit.  If the trees are fairly new I would ask the nursery what has gone wrong, grafts can fail and a decent nursery will often replace them.

You are right, but at £3.99 from Aldi I can't get replacements, the trees are in their first year (with me that is)
I am hoping for a Quince  :) but Damsons make good wine too!

My plum tree started to grow little yellow wild plums.  Afterwards when I had a good look, I realised that where the yellow plums were growing, that was the bit that was growing from beneath the graft.

So it looked like the only bit of my plum tree that was alive was the original plant which was a wild plum.

I've got this problem with an apple tree my husband bought me from T*sco last year. The top is completely dead having failed to come through the winter, but is growing away from the base. I shall leave it and see what happens  :)
