I too like my Welsummers, but also Buff Orpingtons, lovely placid 'pets' for me, unfortunatly not good in wet and muddy weather.

We've put a bag of Hempcore down in the covered run this time for the poots and it seems to be working really well much better than bark

must admit the cocks of both these breeds (in the large fowl anyway) are magnificent  .
Strangly enough Kellogs when you first came on here I though you must have Welsummers as the cockerels of these are known as the Kellogs bird (the cocks are super but the girls are a bit mousy).

That said, I think leaving the personality of the individuals aside, I think Polands are my faves...(I just hope my Araucanas,Brahma,cochin,cream legbars, silkies,Pekins, silkies..CROAD Langshans, sussex,hybrids,faverolles......etc dont find out

Do hybrids lay the same number of eggs as a pure breed?  This is probably a stupid question, but I dont know  :blink:

They lay more usually.

I have only two hens, a 4 year old and a 6 year old, both hybrids and still laying all summer long, though they do now take some time off in the winter    They didn't for the first two years though.

I THINK they lay similar amounts in a lifetime, but hybrids lay really,really well in the early years, and tail off at the end, whereas the pure breeds tend to space out their laying. But there are individuals of either that flout the rules.

Either way, chickens are born with a number of potential eggs, and when they are gone, they are gone, whether  laid every day for 3 years, or every 3rd day for 9 years.
