I normally only plant my garlic from my own stock in the Autumn. But this year i have extra space and picked up a coulple of bulbs of Spring Garlic which i have planted both in the polytunnel and in the ground outside.

They have come up really quickly, and i'm not sure the ones in the PT will get a proper frosting/period of cold.

Does spring garlic need a cold spell to clove up?

I think so. I planted a little late last year and it didn't split. A friend told me to put the cloves in the freezer for 20mins every day for a week. Haven't tried it as I planted in Autumn this time.. Would be an interesting experiment though!

I'm not so sure; I've never grown spring planted garlic but I'd have thought the whole difference between them is whether there is the need for stratification (cold period), and a shorter sowing-harvest time.

Putting the cloves in the fridge / freezer is relevant to late-sowed autumn varieties only, I should have thought.
