Welcome to the site Maxine, feel free to pop into the Welcome forum for a proper Hello!

I'm not sure on spring planted garlic varieties as I always plant in the autumn; I'm sure others will be along to suggest some ideas soon.

Whereabouts in N Yorks are you based?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The best bit of advice I was given was grow what you will eat. I grew lots of new stuff that I (and more importantly the wife and kids) had never tried before and ended up throwing stuff as no one was interested in eating it! I eat almost anything but none of them liked Jerusalam artichoke, borlotti beans or fennel.

Sweetcorn was pretty easy to grow and the kids loved it, squash and pumpkins were also good and keep well so dont get wasted.

Not sure about the garlic but beware of the Jerusalam Artichokes.

I planted them on my last plot and couldn't get rid of them!
Every year they kept comming up and spreading, even though i thought i got every one out.

If i were to do them again i would plant them in a half barrel set into the ground with drainage holes in the bottom and lined with debris netting.  ;)

I have a variety called Solent Wight which I shall be planting fairly soon.

Most of mine went in before Christmas, but I still have this one, plus some elephant garlic (which is related to leeks and makes huge mild cloves).

One of the staff at the Garlic farm on the Isle of Wight, where I bought these, told me it did  well from a spring planting.

The elephant garlic is just some I have left and now want to plant.

You can always look in your local Garden Centre, as they should have some that is suitable

As recommended by Sunshineband Solent Wight is good and can be planted now and for the next few weeks. It produces good sized bulbs and keeps well. Nice and tasty and not too strong.
