spring garlic?
« on: April 06, 2009, 21:42 »
Is anyone else growing spring garlic? Mine arrived yesterday and I shall plant it tomorrow but am worried it won't have a long enough growing season now. Anyone done this last year, please?

It's me again  yes i did that last year cos i was late getting the raised beds ready.
The bulbs didn't get as big as autumn planted ones but were still worth growing and they all got eaten so must have been ok  :D

Maybe if you feed them well or have good soil you'll do better........my soil is poor and i don't think i fed stuff enough last year :(  (you live and learn)

That's a relief  :D They are so fat and juicy looking it would be such a shame if they were not going to come to anything. off to plant them now (yes, back to school - only way to get this done as by 20/4 it will be even more 'too late'

Thank you, Mumofstig  :)

I always take my autumn planted up when the shoots dry off and droop then leave them to dry off for a couple of days.

When your garlic is ready the leaves will yellow. Probably June.

I had exactly the same question last week (for the same reason - I'll know to order really early next time!) and the concensus seemed to be to stick it in the ground asap but not to worry.  I didn't have chance to plant it all so some of it will be going in this weekend anyway.

The way I'm looking at it is: even if it doesn't end up producing as much as if it had been planted earlier, it's still going to produce more garlic in the ground than stuck in the shed!

I do autumn planted for the main harvest and spring planting for green garlic, milder in flavour and not as big but you can use the whole plantand as HLS says you get more in the ground than the shed.
