garlic like spring onions !
« on: June 13, 2011, 19:04 »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can tell me why I have garlic that looks like a large spring onion. I planted half of my solent wight garlic last halloween. It sprouted and survived the awful winter and continued to grow really well. Even during the recent hot spell I have been making sure they have had lots of water. Now the tips of the leaves are turning brown I thought I would lift one of the garlic and was very disappointed to find a large spring onion  :(. Does anyone have any advice. They were container grown in multipurpose compost with added growmore to feed the garlic and as I have said they have been well watered. Does anyone have any suggestions??

I planted the rest of the garlic in the spring and obviously it will be a month or so behind this one. Is there anything i can do to that now
Thanks
A very disappointed first time garlic grower  :(

I planted mine in the autumn, but it's not time to dig them yet!

They don't bulb up until the last minute, so I'd leave them as long as there is any green in the leaves at all

Quite relieved by your post mum as mine are rather like annied. Caught one by mistake and broke the tops - it may have been smal but it tasted good. M
When I arrived, there were so many docks, I thought it was Southampton.

I plant a load extra so I can pull some "green" before the bulb has got large and the cloves have separated. I find it's sweeter and milder.....great for raw or stir fries.
