Weather this weekend
« on: June 02, 2009, 10:39 »
Hi

I have just had a look at the night weather for this weekend and metcheck is showing temperatures down to about 4 degrees in my area

Is there anything i can do to protect my climbing french beans/sweetcorn, both of which are now over 2ft high and so I am not sure how to cover them?  :(

Thanks for the help  xx

For the beans....Put some fleece, old net curtains, large plastic bags even newspapers along each outer side of the row of canes/strings. Clip them up the canes with clothes pegs.

For the corn cover with fleece/nets (got any old sheets?)etc only light stuff as you don't want to flatten them.

Anything other than fleece or nets will have to be removed fairly quickly the next morning though...good luck

Thanks .....  according to the weather forcast at the moment it seems much of the UK is going to be getting much colder!!!   ;)  - I hope the forcast changes  :(

Sweetcorn have been outside for over a month now and been ok so fingers crossed for the cold spell.  Have still got some beans growing inside just incase  :)

According to the weather reports parts of essex will drop to 1'C on wednesday evening, my corn has been in for a week so far its around 12" tall.
I would put fleace over the top but our site is so windy even on a calm day it would blow away, if i put plastic bottles over the top of the corn will that do the trick?

Check it again on Friday you'll probably find its all changed.

Of late your might as well hang seaweed out of the window for a weather reading it would be more accurate !!!

Have you noticed none of the forecasters are mentioning the strong gusty winds at the moment, sunny out in the garden but the wind is still cool :(
but when the winds change to coming from the north as forecast fot the weekend..... suddenly thay take notice!

I don't always find Metcheck very reliable, but you could 'fleece up' to be on the safe side.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!
