Looking for ideas to best use a wall productively
« on: August 13, 2010, 16:50 »
North Lincolnshire, fairly light soils -- rear of the house faces North but at right angles to house wall we have a tall garden wall facing east about 15 foot long and 10 foot high so effectively we have an L shape with high walls on its south and west edges but open to the North and east.  Plenty of root depth and every chance to alter soil characteristics. OH talking about extending patio, hanging baskets, etc, etc but I am keen to use the East facing wall space productively. But how ???
Any ideas please. My first thoughts are will not be enough sun for enough of the day for grapes, apricots, figs, etc and we do get some frost though usually proximity to house and sheltered aspect limits this to minus one or two. Citrus is probably out because of frost. We are reasonably OK for apples, pears, plums having just planted a few more in old orchard
Already reasonably well off for greenhouse space and we dont really want a conservatory especially since not in sun in evening.
Any ideas please???????????

They're a great stress reliever, just don't bang your head too hard.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes, I've got a similar space on one wall of my garage, open to north and west with a border running along the wall. I've started an espalier trained cherry on it and it's going great guns.

many thanks keep them coming please.
DD whilst I quite agree it is a very hard wall outside. I do have a space in the office at home with a slightly softer wall reserved for banging my head against -- like today being rained off cutting my beech hedges with the company end of year accounts waiting to be done once I was forced inside. How I hate that job !!!!!!!!!!
Still they are done now and sent off to the accountant so he can find things wrong with them whilst I get a clear run at my garden jobs (I hope) whilst I wait to hear what I owe the taxman this time around.
