really new to growing, advice??
« on: August 13, 2010, 14:05 »
Hi everybody. I've only been growing since april this year. So far I have got tomato blight and have only just managed to save my cauliflowers from an infestation of cabbage white catterpillars :(.

My first carrot was eaten in the ground, but my others seem to be doing ok (have read that enviromesh may be the key to this??

My leeks are doing brilliantly!

Is there anything I can plant now????

I am desperate to start something else growing!

I have my pea seeds for later in the autumn, and have just started a planter off with 'Christmas' potatoes.

ANY advice atall on ANYTHING!! will be fab.

I'm worried about my potatoes succumbing to blight with all this wet weather so I'm keeping the planter under the garden table at the moment? Any advice?

Also I have just ordered a mini greenhouse (plasic one with a zip) and a poly tunnel. Any advice on how to best utilize these things would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to go on. I've read so much my head is buzzing ::).

Also, do most of you keep chickens?

Thank you
Karen x

Hi there

Yes, many on here are poultry keepers so you can get good advice here

As regards what to sow now, the site boss has written a book on this very subject which is available here  :)

I'm thinking of sowing winter lettuces, winter hardy spring onions, there are bound to be brassicas which can be sown now for spring eating. Overwintering onions are available from sets and a good one to grow is Radar.  You can grow garlic over the winter as well.  Winter spinach is a good one to sow now.  I like Bordeaux as it's good in salads too

Radishes only take about 6 weeks from planting to eating. You can pretty much see them getting bigger daily. Dead easy to grow too.

Have a look at http://www.allotment-garden.org/garden_month.php for ideas for each month.

Could try Pak Choi, they are pretty quick to germinate and grow, pick when small as they can run to seed. Although one opinion is they seed because in our summer the days are long and they prefer(need) an even day/night split which we have (more or less as at present).

Also turnip, I did 2 weeks ago, sprouted and growing. Suppose if they do anything they will make golf ball size not tennis ball, but so what.

Will say that I bought both seeds at Wilkinsons and they were half price, so if it all fails no great cost, (less then  £1). :D :D :D :D Also had 2 small patches of ground so in they went.

With the plastic greenhouse and polytunnel, ventilation is the key to success.
Cheese makes everything better.

Thank you all so much for your advice!

I'm so glad i found this site!

Another quick question .....Do strawberries do better off the ground, say in a hanging basket or something? I had trouble with mine (again 1st time growing) and had to prop them up to keep them from going mushy. Plus had a problem with slugs too  :(

I'm learning a lot from my first year  ;)
