I have read that a blood spot is caused by a ruptured blood vessel on the yolk surface during formation of the egg, they are safe to eat

It happened to a couple of my eggs a few months back and it hasn't happened since. It wasn't something that continued with my girls and I hope it is the same for yours, which I am sure it will be.

I am no expert, but I did have some eggs from a supermarket and they had blood, we complained and they investigated.  We were told that at some point in production the chicken may have had a fright or been disturbed, thats its very common and the eggs are perfectly ok, although I didnt fancy them afterwards.
I have 1 Lovely Husband, 2 lovely children, Poppy the Jack Russell, Alvin the Hamster, Jemima & Florence, Ben & Jerry the Budgies and our gorgeous Chick Sylvia and Jess aka Terry :D
