Blood in eggs
« on: April 04, 2010, 12:07 »
My white chicken lays large white eggs, and sometimes the white of the egg is very bl00dy. Not just a little speck which I know is normal, but the white is all red. Does this mean there is something wrong internally. Its not every egg, but it is happening more often, I have in the last 2 months had about 6 of these.

nothing to worry about it is just when a blood vessel has burst in the hens reproductive system - perfectly safe to eat (although I always remove that bit first ).
Staffies are softer than you think.

Is it a little blood/meat spot, or is ALL the white red?

How curious. Not heard of this before. Does the hen seem well otherwise?
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

this is not from a chicken changing sex it is more than likely from a trauma happening during the egg development stage.

Chickens can change sex, but its soooo rare, I think the incidence of it happening is something like 1-in-10,000 . Hens only have 1 working overy, and a sex change can happen when the working overy becomes damaged causing the testosterone levels to increase. The hens dont grow male reproductive organs and are not fertile, but they crow and behave like a cockerel. This wouldnt cause bl00dy eggs, and if the hen had damaged the working overy it would be unlikely to lay any eggs let alone blooming eggs....try not to be too freaked out hun ;)
I agree with Joy, could be a shock or a bit of a bleed caused by a rupture. I would think it would be more common in older hens, are you absolutely sure of her age?

I'm not 100% sure of her age, and she is fine in herself. We dont have a cockerel, and most days the eggs are fine, she lays beautiful large white eggs, with the odd double yolker.  Just every so often we get one that is like this. I guess I will just have to keep an eye on her. But as I said she is fine in herself, she is the dominant one in the group, I have four girlies, despite being the smallest, tattiest looking one!! She does have a large comb though.
