Leeks
« on: April 22, 2012, 20:30 »
On the 5th Feb I sowed my leek seeds into seed trays I am starting to get a little worried because after 12 weeks they are still like grass.

Should I be worried or is it just me being impatient?

I planted some around the same time and mine are too.
Don't think that will help much but it's a comparison.

If you want a little reassurance (or failing that, a little giggle!) type "leeks biro" (without the quote marks) into the search facility on this forum - I suppose the most important thing is to get them out into the ground soon enough for them to have time to grow to a good size irrespective of what the definition of "big enough to plant out" is!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I'm less concerned!

Thanks

having watched a couple of videos from the forum home page the one on leeks shows them being potted on from fairly deep trays in which case my assumption can only be that the trays you are using may not be deep enough like mine so i have moved them into a deeper pot with fresh compost in the hope that they will do better and become more pencil thick!  ??? ;) :)
check out the videos if you havent already very informative!!!! :D

Cheers DD. could I transplant the ones I started in february into a deeper box or tray now or should I just start more? They are Lyon 2.

No harm in transplanting them.

I transplanted mine on Sunday in to individual modules that are about 1 1/2" deep & perhaps1" across. Used them before & have been quite successful. I will begin to harden them off when this wet weather subsides a bit.

I plant mine out late June/early July and still get good, thick shanks so I wouldn't worry too much about what they look like at the moment

I have just cleared my seed trays and considering what to grow next, to be honest I'm in two minds as to grow from seed or buy plugs... What you think?

My first sowing of a trial variety are in six inches of compost and they haven`t moved in the last month. :(
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

For my first try I grew leeks in seed trays. Obviously too short as they just stayed like grass. So now I've got them in larger pots.
