flowering broccoli
« on: August 12, 2011, 20:20 »
Hello All! hope you are all well and unlooted, anyway our broccoli had tiny little florets on and while we waited for more to appear it's bin and gone and flowered :( which makes me think

1) you have to plant loads to get a worthwhile crop

2) Iv'e done something wrong (my odds on favourite)

3) such a large plant for such small reward is a waste of ground

any ideas? humorous or otherwise helpful Ta! Ian

Lots of us have these small heads this year -- keep cutting, they keep coming  :D

I've had a few too and hoping for more but have you tried the leaves? They are delicious! Just don't cut too many!

My purple sprouting seems to be starting off nicely but the autumn spear looks dodgy.  It just seems to consist of thin 6 inch stalks with withering or dead leaves and no florets?  The one on the end has a yellow flower as well.  Does anyone know if this is a good or bad thing?

The heads are baby flower buds so once they show yellow they are past it, so cut these off, along with nayhting else you think looks unhealthy.

Give them a good feed of chicken manure pellets or similar, water if needed and they shoud be fine  :)
