Just to let you know all of my winter planted raspberry cane are now showing signs of life, most from the bottom though some have new buds showing on the old stalk.  Strange because they are all the same type!

I believe, though could be mistaken, that buds that grow from the brown stalk should produce fruit sooner than the ones coming straight up from the ground.

I put in 15 new bare root canes last autumn and moved some established plants to create a raspberry area in the garden. The older plants are doing well with plenty of new growth but the new canes are only just starting to show some life. They're a mix of early middle and late fruiting plants but I don't expect them to do much this year other than establish themselves.
I will have to console myself with picking the copious wild brambles down beside the river instead.

Got to admit I don't think some of mine will come to life  :( - I know it's early yet but all the fruit bushes and trees are well awake now

I even planted a bare root pear tree and that's coming to life nicely

shame cause they all looked nice and healthy with plenty of roots and were well packed and after soaking the roots I more or less planted them straight away in November

plenty of organic matter went into so guess some of us are just unlucky

Don't despair, I thought my autumn canes, planted last January weren't going to come to life. But last Thursday, a couple of them sent up shoots from the base. We live in hope!  :)
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

Still nothing here yet!

I emailed marhalls, who I bought them from, and they said it was possibly a bit early, but also said I could get my money back if they dont come life in the next few weeks.

I have only 4 canes sprouting of the 18 I planted. No sign that the rest are still alive  :(.

I made an enquiry with the garden centre that I purchased them from and they said they would be more than happy to swap them, so yesterday I popped off to the garden centre I am now the proud owner of some new canes all with some evidence of growth.  Just need to pop them in the plot now.  I feel bad just discarding the old ones but there was no evidence of life in the old canes.

Checked again yesterday.  Still nought!
I've asked Marshalls for my money back, as I dont think they will be able to send out new canes now as it's too late.
Will see what they say.

I emailed Pomona Fruits about mine today as still only 4 canes have sent up shoots. I got a very helpful reply saying they often see new canes taking until June to grow new shoots so I should not give up until mid-June. They have said if I have no luck by then, they will provide me with replacements in the autumn. So I now have renewed hope  :) and all my fingers and toes are crossed.
