Raspberry - dead?
« on: July 07, 2012, 22:27 »
Hi,

I planted a raspberry this year, in the effort to save it.  Only had one cane but leaves and few flowers.  It nw has now leaves, and 2 fruits started to ripen.

It's an autumn variety if that makes a difference.  No new growth from the cane.  I'm figuring that it's now dead as it doesn't have any leaves to put energy back into the crown for next year.

Should I pull it up?  I have a lovely new healthy looking one that's sat in a pot that could go in it's place without me having to dig a new border.  What do you reckon?

A shame you let it fruit as it took a lot of energy from the plant. But, it could well recover. Put a marker stick with the cane and leave it until next year and see what happens. By marking it, there's no doubt which one it was in case you decide to plant the other raspberry close by. In adverse weather raspberries can sometimes go into early hibernation so give it a chance.
