Day 21.
« on: October 17, 2012, 21:27 »
Betty my forever broody Brahma has now been sitting on a clutch of bantam chocolate orpington and mixed pekin eggs for 21 days. No sign of any chicks yet but can't wait to listen in on her in the morning.

No sign of any chicks yet. Will check again when I put the girls to bed tonight. For now I will hum, twiddle my thumbs, tap my fingers impatiently...........

I'm guessing this lot might be too.  Didn't hear any chicks when I put the chickens to bed but then I didn't bother Betty either, she has been a great Mum before so I'm sure she will do as well as she can. It's not really the best time of year for hatching either but Betty wont be put off once she decides she wants babies.   ::)

Best to leave her to it, she will only leave the eggs when she is sure they aren't viable.

Had a little look when putting the girls to bed tonight. There were two chicks. They look so tiny! Not hatched any bantam breeds before.

No pics just yet. Betty hasn't brought them out to show them off. Not sure how many there are yet but she still has a few eggs too. I don't really know when I should remove the eggs but will candle them later just to be on the safe side (I don't want any exploding!). Last night I found a dead pekin chick that Betty had pushed outside, it still had a hole in it's belly so wouldn't of survived anyway.

Betty will decide when the eggs aren't viable.  Have a listen to the egg for chirping and check for pipping before considering candling.  ;)

I didn't candle, just chucked them as they were so cold. Mum has been out and about with her babies and was no longer sitting in the same spot the eggs were in. Only two chicks, one choc orp  bantam and one pekin (it's either a red or lemon cuckoo). A couple of chicks had almost hatched but died.

I also have 6 pekin chicks indoors that I was going to put under Betty but I think I'll keep them inside due to how cold it's got today.
