Cutting leaves of Strawberries

I have a fruit growing book that says in September or so you should snip off all the leaves of your strawberry plants. Seems a bit harsh to me. Is this really correct?

I did it end of Aug, with 2 leaves left on each plant and all runners cut off, now they are full of leaves and runners again!
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

They thrive with a haircut once a year!! Cut off the big old leaves and runners if you are not keeping some - carefully not to cut the new leaves..  they will grow new leaves in a few weeks.. It should still be ok to do them now..

Old ones are easy to spot - biggest, reddest, and driest looking   :D

I gave our strawbs a short back and sides a few days ago and new fresh green leaves are already showing through.

I'm going to carry out a tip I think I read on here which was to cut holes in the bases of plastic supermarket trifle bowls feeding the new leaves through the hole.  As curry lovers I've been collecting the 'big crisp' plastic containers. 8)

Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I read in an old Smallholder magazine that when they used to grow the strawberries and mulch with straw, at the end of the season they used to set fire to the straw, which also burnt all the strawberry leaves, then waited for the new ones to appear.

I cut mine back several weeks ago, but there are loads new leaves now!

I'd give that a go but my currant bushes and fruit cage won't like it!

Cheers,   Tony.

Burning sounds a bit harsh... in my case it would burn my weed suppressant membrane!! so I wont go down that route..
