A new arrival...I'd appreciate thoughts please...
« on: September 26, 2012, 08:44 »
Morning all
We have a new arrival in the form of a Black Rock called Emily. She is apparently 19 weeks old (so I've been told, though I'd bet my bananas she's a couple of weeks shy of that) and riddled with mites, has warm feet etc. obviously she's in the poorly hen accommodation away from the girls (we have 8 ex free range plus ex bats) and all are being wormed and treated for critters without exception (ok,paranoia but I loathe critters lurking in the feathers...) but warm feet??? Is this symptomatic of bumble foot or does Emily just have warm feet? She's a lovely girl, now she's gotten over the fear etc she's nosy and just a pleasure of a chook.
All thoughts please....this is new territory for me....
My chickens probably make more sense than I do so forgive me ;-)

Not sure that this is anything to worry about, some of mine have nice warm feet. Are there any other signs of problems with her legs/ feet?

Best to treat Emily for the lice also worm with flubenvet.  Check for scaley leg mite and treat if necessary.  Then she will be on the same timescale of treatment as the rest of your flock which makes things easier.  My younger pullets seem to have warm feet but they are healthy birds.  You should be able to see an abnomality in the foot if she has bumblefoot.

I can't see or feel anything untoward with her feet or legs so will assume she's just a warm footed girl?
I'm treating the whole naughty crew as well as Emily with flubenvet and mite treatment to try to avoid cross contamination, and wonder when to start introducing her to them of a night? The poorly coop is alongside the main run so there is familiarity there. Bless her, Emily is huge in comparison to her ex-bat coop mates to be!
She doesn't know what to do with corn on the cob.....

She sounds big if she is only 19 weeks old.     My Black Rocks only got bigger than my Bovan Goldlines after they were 12 months old.

She was a trifle sparse feather wise when we got her due to the mites plus a lot of bullying so when she has more feathers, if I put up a photo, maybe you/someone could confirm whether she is a Black Rock as claimed or something else? She is a giant.... :tongue2:

We love photos so that will be great.  I don't have any up to date photos of mine but will try and get some if it every stops raining.

If you're really lucky she might be a Black Copper Maran. Let us know the egg colour when you get some :)

I have a hen (one that survived the flooding) that jumps on my back and onto my shoulders and I am always suprised how warm her feet feel on my back/shoulders. I suppose it is :) knowing what is normal for each bird!
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
