Celery woes
« on: August 31, 2012, 18:07 »
How on earth do members grow celery that isn't full of wildlife? I followed the advice on here, tying up the stalks with string etc but two plants harvested today, when I tried to clean them up for cooking, were like a menagerie with worms and slugs living in the hearts of the plants

I harvested my first celery yesterday. I don't tie mine up at all. Never heard of it.  Fortunately mine were clean and unmunched. The soil was very dry which was surprising in view of how wet it's been lately.

I never tie mine either; can't see the reason. This year I grew Tango and other than something stealing two plants, they aren't at all buggy. I mulched mine because we were in a severe drought for 3 months so I watered every 2nd day.

Doesn't that depend on whether they are self blaching or not?

I sometimes grow trenching varieties and also find a lot of worms etc get in when burried.  So I have found it better to grow them on the surface and tie newspaper around to blanch them.

I only grow the self blanching variety, above ground. They need nothing except soil enriched with manure etc to hold onto moisture, which they like lots of until they get established  :)
