Blight has arrived on my tomatoes and Sarpo potatoes
« on: August 15, 2012, 17:31 »
My tomatoes at the lotty hit the bug yesterday :(.

Lovely healthy plants, then ...... black stems, scrotty fruit. All up and binned.

Its also got to my Sarpo potatoes (supposedly blight resistant). The leaves are spotty but they still look better than all the potatoes around and about on other allotments.

It is heart breaking after all that effort isn't it? I think it is only the very lucky few who have/will get away with it this year :(

Exactly the same here - surrounding plots have been decimated so its not too bad, but my Sarpo Mira and Cara are starting to show the signs of blight.  Might be time to cut & harvest.

The sarpo potatoes seem to be surviving. Although the leaves are still spotty, the plants look really healthy (at least compared to all the surrounding plots). I've dug up a couple of roots and there are lots of spuds but not as big as last year. I think I'm going to leave them in and trust to luck for longer.

Blight resistant does not mean blight immune though, so keep a careful eye on those Sarpos - they have resisted so far, but may not be able to hang out for ever

My Sarpo Mira are the only ones still standing.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I was reading one of last year's Country Smallholding magazines the other day, and Alan Beat who has had a 16 acre smallholding for 20 years was doing a review each month of John Seymour's Self Sufficiency book.

Alan said that John said to use bordeaux mixture on the potatoes against blight, but then Alan said we don't need to use that anymore now that we have all these new blight resistant potatoes.

I'm tempted to send the magazine an email and ask them how Alan's potatoes are getting on considering nearly everyone else's in the country have succumbed whether they are blight resistant or not!  :)

Sarpos are still standing. A few spots on the leaves but they seem to be doing fine. Dug up a few roots and their cropping well as well (although the slugs seem to be getting into a few of them). This is the first year when I've seen the Sarpos be so different to other varieties, for maincrop they don't taste too bad either.

I've been recommending growing Sarpo - at least as part of your crop - for 6 years now, for this very reason.

I knew this day would eventually come!

My Cara are absolutely riddled with wireworm (I think) and slugs, and are starting to struggle more and more with blight - however! - the Sarpo Mira are still romping away.  Blight patches on most leaves, but only small spots.

The Sarpo themselves are lovely, an odd one on each plant has a bit of a nibble on it, but mostly they are fine!

See?   :D   I'm delighted with them

Check them again HG.  It could be early blight (target spot) rather than late blight.
